This afternoon we'll take the train to visit my parents in Huizen and to enjoy a nice Koninginnedag in Amsterdam. The weather forecast is very good, so we won't have any trouble there
Yesterday we were invited to a wedding, which was also very nice. Due to the fact that the wedding started early in the morning we were back at home quite early, which wasn't too bad becasue of the trip today.
Which German region does this come from?

If you use office 2007 this will interest you. They released a patch with which you can directly save as PDF or XPS format.
Really good, it is much faster than the Adobe PDF generator.

Busy weekend

This was quite an effective weekend, if I may say so. I managed to get some stuff done that was lying around for ages, like getting our bikes up and running again (party effective), putting the summer tires under my car (done), getting the chairs for our balcony down and building them together again (done) and some small stuff.
Probably the weather caused me to have that energy, it is still amazingly good weather here for the time of the year with temperatures rising over 20 degrees Celcius almost every day. Unfortunately that won't help me much as I have to get to work again.....
Backup strategy

As I mentioned before I want to develop a good backup strategy for my home pc. Currently I'm strying out this service called
Mozy, who offer 2Gb (!) of storage for backups online. The data is encrypted using a personal key, so even they cannot read the data directly if they want to.
Still, uploading 1,2 Gb worth of data takes sometime when doing so using a DSL upload. They promise to have a smart incremental update mechanism which will increase the upload times after the initial update..
we'll see!

Update: There is an interesting article on
New York Times, amusing to read.
I will also check out
XDrive, Carbonite
Another update:
I finished the first backup and after that mozy reallz gets quick. Therefore I've decided to invest the 5$ a month for the unlimited account and will now upload around 25Gb (!!!) of data, including all my photo's and mp3s.... that will take some time

Because I have been forced (ok, it was what I wanted to) to get a little further from the tech stuff at work I have felt the urge to do something at home again. This means that probably some changes to this blog are coming soon, currently focus is on the photo album. But to satisfy my urge for tech stuff I've started working with
Gentoo Linux again.
Currently I'm setting up a plays ystem on an extra box, because it is not the newest one it will take some time:

Uninstalling windows OneCare

I've been trying out the current beta of Windows Live OneCare for 90 days now, and today it started nagging on activation. So you can activate it for three years, which costs $49,95 a year. Included in this price is the program with updates for firewall, virus scan, system maintenance and spyware cleanup. And now I'm installing it.
The funny thing is that I tried to activate it a couple of times in the last few weeks, I even had my credit card ready to punch in the numbers. But every time I got stuck somewhere in the process and never reached a site where I could pay for the service and really activate it. Today it really reached the last day of the trial and started nagging me. So I went out and actually started searching for ways to activate it. Doing so I came upon some
sites with reviews that made me change my mind.
So now I'm going to install the stuff myself:
The only thing I still have to find is a good tool for system maintenance (I think I'll write some scripts myself) and create a solid backup system which includes offsite backups with my parent, online backups etc. I hope to
steal some ideas from Scott here.

Office 2007 --> Sending word documents as email content

Today I had to fight with office 2007 again, because when we are handing in our vacation requests we have to sent an email containing a word form. This is digitally signed, so everything is clean and traceable.
But somehow the function to send a word document as email content was gone in office 2007. Because I'm a beta tester within our company it was not really possible to find support for this, so after searching the web I found this:

I just heard that the
freediver Leferne died during a training accident in France. He was training for breaking the current worldrecord in no limits free diving, which is currently set to 183 meter.
As the article stated the reason was equipment failure....

As some might know I like sheep... not in the way Coen will think, but I think those woolen animals are cute... even though they're not the smartest kind of animal you find on this planet.
A while ago I saw the following book here in Germany in the bookstores, and this weekend I finally went and bought it
I'll let you know how it is

This one gave us at work a big laugh. One of our external consultants is on holiday for two weeks, but somehow this is not really working out the way a normal holiday should be. Just take a look at his message with messenger:

Interesting stuff, how do you call the light in the middle of the traffic light. In the Netherlands we say "Oranje", which is orange. But here in Germany they always say it is yellow ("Gelb").

How I got into this discussion? Well, we are reporting our project status using traffic lights, where we always want to have green, sometimes have yellow/orange and hope to never get to red (which means management will kick our a..).
Post your opinion here as comment, I wanna know how it is called in different countries!

5 degrees celcius / 41 degrees Fahrenheit bottom
7 degrees celcius / 44 degrees Fahrenheit surface
Dive two
37 mins
12,7 meter
same temperatures

Today I will try out my new dry suit, as posted here and here.
I also got an undersuit of a diving friend that I will try out, as well as my new regulator. So I'm all ready to go.
The weather should be ok
