Today it is time to cook again, seems that cooking is currently the only topic I find time to write about on this blog.

Today's cooking opportunity : Vegan banana cake, here's the recipe - I let you know how it went:

Vegan banana cake with almonds
This vegan banana cake is very easy to make and so soft and moist that everyone will love it.

Recipe vegan banana cake with almonds for a 10 inch square baking pan

300 g (10.5 oz.) wheat flour
200 g (7 oz.) sugar
3 ripe bananas, finely sliced
125 g (4.2 fl. oz.) vegetable oil
100 g (3.5 oz.) slivered almonds
50 g (1.8 oz.) dark vegan chocolate, chopped
1 ½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla essence
400 ml (13.5 fl. oz.) coconut milk

Preheat the oven to 200°C / 390°F and line a baking pan with parchment paper. Give all ingredients into the bowl of the kitchen machine. In the beginning mix on low speed, then mix on highest speed until fluffy. Pour into the baking pan and bake for approximately 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove the cake from the oven and let stand in the pan for 10 minutes. Then let cool on a wire rack. Powder the cake with icing sugar.

Enjoy!

Recipe for Yu Xiang Qie Zi (Sichuan Eggplant)

This weekend we'll be doing some chinese cooking again - so I shamelessly scanned the internet for this great recipe .
We love to eat this dish at our favorite chinese restaurant here in Nürnberg - Friends House - so this is a first for doing it ourselves :) Wish us luck:
---

Yu Xiang Qie Zi (Sichuan Eggplant)
Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Serve: 2

Sichuan style eggplants stir fry

Yu Xiang Qie Zi (Sichuan Eggplant)
Ingredients

2 Asian long eggplants
3 pickled red pepper (or replace with fresh Thai red peppers), finely chopped
1 tablespoon broad bean paste (Doubanjiang)
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped ginger
2 green onions, white part and green part separately chopped
Coriander for decoration
2 tablespoons of vegetable cooking oil
1 teaspoon salt for soaking
Stir fry sauce
1 tablespoons light soy sauce
1 tablespoons black vinegar
1 tablespoon cooking wine
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon water
Salt as needed
Instructions

Roll cut washed eggplants into long strips (try to keep some skin on each one). Then soak the eggplant strips in salty water for around 15 minutes. Move out and drain.
Prepare a bowl; mix all the ingredients for stir fry sauce. Then set aside.
Heat up 2 tablespoons of oil in wok (comparing with other ingredients, eggplants need more oil) until you can see the waves.
Add eggplants in and stir-fry until soft. Firstly the eggplants will absorb almost all the oils in the wok and then return some back after 2 or 3 minutes.
Move the eggplants out or to one side of the wok; add garlic, chopped peppers, green onion white part and ginger to stir-fry for the aroma. Add doubanjiang to continue cooking for 1 minute for red oil. Then mix all the content in wok.
Stir in the sauce. Mix well and make sure the eggplants are well coated.
Move from wok, sprinkle chopped green onion and coriander leaves.
Notes

Since both doubanjiang and soy sauce contains salt. So spare your salt.

Backing up Email to synology NAS

For some time my backup solution was running quiet behind my back:
- All my documents are synced between my workstation and my Synology NAS
- all Music, Photos and videos are stored directly on the NAS
- The NAS has 2 3Tb HDDs which are mirrored, in case one of them breaks
- all data on the NAS is backed up in the Cloud using Crashplan with a headless client on the NAS
... and regulary I make offline backups on a portable harddisk that I put with the parents in law

One thing that Scott Hanselmann pointed out was "do not trust the could. Since about 5 years all of my email is running through gmail, thus if something happens there or Google turns out to be evil I have a big issue.
Thus this solution came up, backing up gmail in a standardized email format using a small python application.

I spend about 2 hours installing, configurating and testing it and now it runs on the NAS in a way I do not have to think about :)

Another step in the backup world...

Update default language on Windows 7 startup screen

As I am working in a German company in Germany the default language setting for our operating systems (Windows 7 Enterprise) is German.
Fortunately enough the enterprise version of windows 7 allows me to add different UI languages and change it to English, so immediately after login I am able to work in my normal environment.... but there was one thing bugging me, the login screen still has the German keyboard as default language. And as there are some minor differences in the keyboard layout (and of course in such a way that it affects my password) I always have to switch the language before entering the password.

Now I found the solution, within the regions and languages settings there is a tab Administrative, where you can copy your regional settings to the login home screen :)

Long time bugging, finally I found time to check on it and it was soooo simple..

Removing all Picasa Webalbums

I have, long time ago, added all of my local photo folders to picasa web so I could access the photos everywhere in case I needed them to show some on the road.
Unfortunately Picasa added all folders as single albums, so also the sub albums, which makes is quite difficult to navigate.
So I decided to remove all albums (ca. 200) and start over... thus discovering that there is no easy remove all option in Picasa Web :S

Fortunately I found this article describing how to do it, now all albums were deleted in a whoosh.

It has been a long time since the last blog entry and in that time a lot has changed.
Personally we enjoy the life with our daughter Charlotte, who has changed our lives completely. I have experienced the joy of her first smile and the terror of sleepless nights, but after we got used to it we really enjoy being a small family

Professionally I have also switched jobs and are now responsible for a team of 20 technical experts for data migration within the environment of PLM (product lifecycle management) software. This was also a big change and I keep on learning stuff everyday.

Unfortunately this meant that there was not much time for diving the last half year, but last weekend we managed to get away to Austria for a long weekend and had our CMAS * Examinations with 9 students. The weather was great with over 30 degrees, but due to heavy rain the sight was horrible. As usual, details of the dives can be found in the diving log.

Setting up a new PC for Manu's dad

The father of Manu has his 60th birthday tomorrow and her mother is giving him a new pc for his birthday. As you can guess I'm the one who had to find, configure and setup the machine

So far he has been working on a very old PC with Windows 98 (!!). That meant that every time he had some problems that I said I will fix in a minute I had to spend several hours finding out how this stuff was supposed to work on Windows 98 again... that was really several centuries ago for me.

So now the big step will be to switch to Windows 7. The new PC has everything he needs and we will give it together with a 22" monitor compared to the old 17" CRT, which is a big advantage (also for Manu, Claudia and me ....

When looking back at the configuration the biggest problem was getting the same old Pinball Pro that he likes so much.. but I've also managed to get that working, so tonight at the party he will be quite suprised when he gets a book on Windows 7 and a paper PC

Just look at this, the weather here in Fürth is definitely better than in the Netherlands, where they still have lot of snow showers.
What does bother me is that we'll have a warm day on Tuesday, thus all the nice snow will be melted away before Christmas... like always!

Trip to Atlanta

I'm currently sitting at the airport in Nürnberg waiting for my flight to go via Amsterdam to Atlanta, as we're having another workshop with our collegues within the USA. It will be interesting, as we are only two weeks away from our first testing cycle and we still have a lot to prepare and align, so I expect it to be a busy week.

For the rest of our application all is going very well, we have managed to reach a level where we have a lot of orders each day (nope, cannot tell you how many on this blog) and are still rollout out new regions, so our goals are still on track.
You can check it out, I am quite proud of it :

I must say, it is quite a cool feeling that several thousands of people are using the software we build every day and use it to order equipment.
